Journal Writing: Find Peace in Writing Your Story

Journal writing can sound more daunting than it really is. There are so many questions, like what do I talk about in my entry? How often should I journal? What will I gain from writing in a journal?

Journal writing saved my life! I have always kept a journal growing up mostly filled with notes about some random relationship shared over huge gaps in time. I never understood the benefits of having a journal, until I found myself battling a deep depression where the answer came in, acknowledging my inner thoughts.

By the end of this post, you will understand how to start journal writing and some great resources to find peace in writing your own story. If this resonates with you, drop a comment saying, “I’m with you” right now.

The Journey to Find Peace in Writing Your Story

In my previous post, Awakening after Depression: He’s All I’ve Got, the end of 2016 was a moment of rebirth for me, and in one of the darkest moments of my life. I found peace in sitting with my thoughts through weekly journaling.

How to Start Journal Writing

Began the Journey: Gather Your Supplies

The first thing you want to do is find a journal; this could be an old notebook or a fancy leather-bound with lined paper. I recently gifted myself the guided journal Becoming by Michelle Obama, which is an excellent option for those who want a little structure on this journey.

Create Peace: Find a Quiet Place

Next, find a quiet space that you can visit at least once a week for 20-30 minutes. For me, this was a group of palm trees at the beach, but now it’s my patio table. There is something calming to me about being in nature.

Write Your Story: Be Open & Honest

Now you’re ready to start the journey to writing your story and finding peace. So, this could be the most challenging part because it requires you to be open and honest with your thoughts. Don’t be afraid!

Know that there is power in fear, and if you push through and take the next step, Freedom is on the other side.
